Job Description

Job Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Design Engineer with expertise in sheet metal and auto components to join our dynamic engineering team. In this role, you will leverage your in-depth knowledge of design principles, material selection, and manufacturing processes to deliver innovative and cost-effective solutions for the automotive sector. As a Senior Design Engineer, you will play a key role in designing, developing, and optimizing sheet metal components and assemblies used in automotive applications, ensuring they meet high-quality standards and adhere to stringent safety and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and development of sheet metal components and assemblies for automotive applications, including chassis parts, body panels, and structural components.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing, quality, and project management, to ensure designs are practical, cost-efficient, and manufacturable.
  • Use CAD software (e.g., Solid Works, CATIA, AutoCAD) to create detailed 3D models, assemblies, and 2D drawings of sheet metal parts and automotive components.
  • Perform engineering analysis to validate designs, including stress analysis, material selection, and component performance, ensuring compliance with automotive standards and regulations.
  • Oversee prototype development and testing, and troubleshoot design issues that arise during the development or production phase.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers and design teams, guiding them through complex design challenges.
  • Optimize designs for manufacturability, cost-effectiveness, and performance, focusing on material efficiency and reducing waste.
  • Ensure all designs meet relevant industry standards, including automotive safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements (e.g., ISO, IATF 16949).
  • Collaborate with suppliers to select appropriate materials and components and resolve any issues related to materials sourcing or manufacturing processes.
  • Review and approve technical documentation, including design specifications, drawings, Bills of Materials (BOM), and change orders.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts by analyzing existing designs and production processes, identifying opportunities to enhance product quality, reduce costs, or improve manufacturability.
  • Work closely with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are optimized for mass production and address any issues encountered during the production phase.

Key Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of [X] years of experience in design engineering, with a focus on sheet metal components and automotive parts.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (Solid Works, CATIA, AutoCAD, or similar).
  • Strong knowledge of sheet metal fabrication processes, including stamping, bending, laser cutting, welding, and assembly.
  • In-depth understanding of automotive component design, including chassis, body, and structural parts.
  • Solid understanding of material properties, including metals (steel, aluminum, etc.), alloys, and their applications in automotive design.
  • Expertise in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and design for manufacturability (DFM).
  • Experience with FEA (Finite Element Analysis) tools for structural and thermal analysis is a plus.
  • Knowledge of automotive industry standards and regulations (e.g., ISO 9001, IATF 16949, safety standards).
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with a focus on practical, innovative solutions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

Desirable Skills:

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with advanced manufacturing techniques, such as laser cutting, hydro forming, and deep drawing.
  • Experience in high-volume automotive production environments (OEMs or Tier 1 suppliers).
  • Familiarity with PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) software and ERP systems.
  • Certifications in Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, or similar methodologies.
  • Knowledge of electric vehicle (EV) components and emerging automotive technologies.
